Have you ever rescued a chicken? Post your story here!

Hmmm...interesting. I didn't read ANYTHING that even hinted that it could hurt your chicks! That's scary. I will look in my history and find the couple articles I read and give you the links....give me a bit to do this...I will get back to you. Cause these people writing these articles need to know the possible issues with messing with the temperature.
Thank you for educating me:)
Ahh, they're saying that STORING eggs at colder temps might tip the ratio... Not incubating them at colder temperatures. That I agree with. Sorry for the confusion. :thumbsup

I have read that changing your INCUBATOR temp can give you more girls or boys....I'll find that article.
And...I am so new that I don't understand the difference in what were are talking about and what the article is saying? I thought it was the same thing?

How to Hatch Hens Not Roosters

Apparently it's all about temperature. I've read that if you raise your incubator temperature just half a degree you're more likely to hatch out males; lower the temperature just half a degree and you will likely hatch out more females. Interestingly, if you hatch under a broody hen, it's thought you're more likely to hatch out more hens. I guess Mother Nature realizes that a flock needs more hens than roosters?

Here's the link to that....http://www.fresheggsdaily.com/2016/04/the-secret-to-hatching-hens-not-roosters.html

This article is about which methods work or not...in figuring out which sex you have. And the second thing is about incubators and turning it up or down...there is a green checkmark next to this indicating it's a proven method.
Again, i want to be clear, I understand NOW that this isn't the case. By doing this you are just having the "girl eggs" hatch. It doesnt ACTUALLY change the sex of the eggs.

Nope. Storing before development starts is different from changing the temp they incubate at. They incubate at 99.5°F internal temperature.

I've run both .5 degree higher than normal and .5 lower than normal... I saw no change in average gender ratio. Would be interesting to run a longer study.

Wait, hold up, storing the eggs at different temperatures would change genders, or did I read that wrong? lol! I currently have a problem with too many roosters, and not enough hens at the moment, and when I start hatching eggs, I don't need excess roos xD

It will NOT change their genders.

Here's my rescue story....
I've never had chickens, or touched one...except the peeps in the feed stores. Lol...this last April I got my first chicken. The drug addict down the road had 6 babies in a glass type stereo case. Remember the Amber tinted glass shelves from the 80's that would house the VCR and stereo system. They were in that! So I took one...it's all I could fit in my jacket pocket! I brought her home with the intention of finding her a good home. Well, i couldn't, and as the days passed, my love for this little critter grew! Lol...I had her in a cage in my bathroom, and would take her out first thing in the morning. She learned to follow me around the house as I did my morning rituals. I have Chihuahuas, and she was Never scared of them. She learned to flip them with her wings and chest bump them so they would stop stealing the treats I would give her! She would come back into my room with me and sit and watch movies. Well, I watched, she preened! Lol....I got a crash course in chickens. And I'm hooked! To be totally honest, I wasn't in a "good" place emotionally, and having Tilly (short for Matilda) has made ALL the difference. I didn't know about 'house children's' or that she would be such a great pet...but she is! In fact cause I raised her with my dogs, she didn't know she was a chicken! Everyone on here told me Tilly needed a friend, so I got her one, but she had been the only chicken for a month. It was interesting to see the difference between them. She wasn't exactly happy to be sharing her mamma, but they are Great friends now. And Tilly has taught Gracie (the new chicken) how to be a house chicken, and Gracie showed her how to FLY! Lol I love my girls so much...I call them my princesses! So that's my rescue story...but I think it was I who was rescued! :loveView attachment 1042023
This is my Matilda the day i stole her! I think she was about 6 weeks.

This is her today...And those are Her blankets in the background, and that's what she does with them...heeps them in one big pile! Lol

And this is Tilly and Gracie sitting on my lap...Gracie is the EE...
Beautiful story!!!
