Because the English language is NUTS.
Just yesterday (Sunday) at my niece's birthday she was reading her cards right? And the one from her mom had the word cherish in it. Which of COURSE she pronounced Che-rish... Cheer-ish... before Mom finally told her it was Chair-ish. Yet ANOTHER word in our language that is NOT phonetic. You just have to memorize that it's one of those... and there's quite a lot of them. Makes learning the language a pain. And then of course there are the homophones... to, too, and two. Doe, Dough (bread, money), Do (as in To Do List or Do-Re-Mi)... it goes on and on. Bloody maddening if you ever stop to think about it.
But here's one... why in the WORLD would anyone run around asking about picking pickled peppers... knowing perfectly well that peppers aren't pickled when they're picked! Is this like the joke about if a rooster is straddling a barn which side will the egg roll off or what?! What always boggled me is that they teach that rhyme in school, but they don't bother actually explaining that little detail. Perpetuating the myth of the pickled pepper plant! Madness.
