Have you had rotator cuff surgery?

Be sure to teach hubby how to fix supper because you wont do much for at least a week. Or have alot of frozen dinners and sandwiches and soups! My hubby was good at take outs, which I tolerated for a short time and had enough of it after a few days and wanted HOME MADE foods!

Yep recliner is the best friend you want while you recover! Laying in bed, nope and its hard to get out...its like a full blown pregnancy when you can not get out of bed and can not roll on the sore shoulder LOL!

As for me how it happened, my step uncle pulled a kitchen chair out from under me as i was proceeding to sit down, landed on my tailbone and my hands caught the seat but oops my body went down therefore wrenched the shoulder way up the max behind me. Put up with it for almost a year until I could not bear it anymore and could not even pull my hand on my hip. It was that bad and I didnt want to move it. So my family doctor said, time to go and get something done.

So I had a cortizone shot, SHEER PAIN from the shot, almost puked. But the results, it felt GOOD! After 24 hours, it was back where it started and doctor said, it may be more severe than he thought. So once he had the surgery, I had torn inpingments and a buildup on the joint, likely arthritis and he shaved it off from the surface and pop it back in and repair the torn muscles and stitch me in three places, not OPEN cut surgery. he took some pics of the joint and it was nasty looking but not as bad as some older folks would have to deal with.

Had mine done 5 years ago. Had the nerve block done to lower the pain after the surgery. It wore off overnight and my shoulder felt fine the next morning. Five hours later I was at the ER getting a shot of Diladid. They say you should do 2 Percocets every 4 hours before the surgery as a loading dose. I didn't do that The first week was hell for pain. Had to sleep in a recliner because you can't sleep laying down. The weight of the arm pulls against the incision and hurts. Took a diladid every night and used percocet during the day. Also took Ambien at night while I was in the recliner so I could sleep.. Your doctor should give you a 30 day script for that idf you ask. Went back to work after 2 weeks and had my arm in a sling for almost a month. I would advise keeping the sling on just to keep from moving the arm real suddenly like if you slip on a wet spot or something.

Do the PT. Be religious about it. Everyone I have spoken to that didn't get full use back didn't finish the PT. I am currently doing PT for the same surgery because I didn't build my supporting muscles up well enough and I get inflamation. The PT is helping and the pain is going away. DO YOUR EXERCISES and you will be just fine. I had to have 2 more surgeries in the same place because of a stretched tendon and arthritis on the clavicle that was rubbing on the muscle and hurt like hell.

Have a good time.

The arthritis was part of my problem, too. There was so much gray, gritty arthritis on the end of the clavicle they had to shave down the bone to get rid of all the arthritic material. Coupled with the rotator cuff repair which required inserting a plastic screw into the clavicle and sewing the torn tendon back to it, there was much more damage and more to be done when they got in there than they originally thought. That's why I ended up with the laparascopic incisions AND a nice long incision where the traditional "open" surgery was done. It's all healing very well, though -- Surgery date was April 1st, (in retrospect, is April Fool's Day REALLY the best day to have a surgery done? ...

) and at my Dr. visit on the 20th, I was released from followups and instructed to call "as needed". Yay! Marshmallow man is right about doing the exercises, though -- When you get to feeling better, you may do like I do and forget to do them in the course of your day. Keep doing them to keep the muscles toned and flexible. I can tell when I've not been diligent enough in doing them, and when I need to make myself take the time to do it.
