Have your hens ever crowed

My grandson got his first chicken at a rodeo (even was called "You Catch it, You Keep it"). We thought it was a roo, sure looked masculine. Even crowed every morning. Grandson named him Roger. (Why Roger, I'll never know). Then one day, Roger started laying eggs! Still crows a lot, too!

Is there something about BO hens that causes gender confusion?

Oh My! I never knew this could happen. It is like Jurassic Park where all the dinosaurs were supposed to be female and then there were males too. Nature finds a way. Freaky how movies are so real.

When I was growing up, we had a flock of Barred Rocks. My favorite hen (we know it was a hen because it laid eggs!) after a while grew long tail feathers like a rooster, started crowing, and got very aggressive and attacked people. Unfortunately for her, her mean behavior earned her a place on the dinner table. I don't remember if she was still laying when she 'changed sexes'. It was very strange, and we never had that happen again.
