My duck was diagnosed with bumble foot today. Vet took off the scab. She also told me to soak the ducks foot in epsiom salt and make the salt into a paste and put it on the hole. Clean her freaquently. And I took the bandage off her like the vet said. Soaked her for 10 mins, some guck came out. I put the salt paste on her foot. That was around 10/1030 and I went to check her. She wont lay down and she seems really warm on her breath across her beak and legs. Should I be worried??

I was actually explaining this to someone else earlier... Bumblefoot itself is swelling and lesions on the foot. What makes it dangerous is the secondary infections such as staph and that is what causes the scabs and pus.

As such sometimes just topical ointments aren't enough. It's a good idea to get antibiotics for worse infections. And infections can cause inflammation and fevers. So it's possible. I question a vet who doesn't give antibiotics for a clearly infected wound but that might just be my ritzy city folk nature talking. I have no idea how country vets do it or if you're even in the country... I'm pretty sure it's standard procedure to prescribe an antibiotic for bumble foot though?

I'd see if you can call the vet and ask about it.

The duck needs to be on antibiotics, I feel. The infections can go systemic and then that is dangerous. I don't want to worry you, but I feel that you need to get the vet to give either an injection or oral antibiotics a.s.a.p.

Well my duck still feels warm. I have her saoking right now and she laid an eggs last night and i think thats why she wouldnt laydown. But when i came out of my room she was sitting so thats better. The vet messaged me aound 2am and told me that if my duck still has the warm/hot feeling to her that shes going to give oral antibotics. I feel bad for my duck :/ But i wouldnt question the vet because she has alot! of ducks and geese of her own and turkeys i beleive and shes always treating bumble foot and hastn had one die from bumble foot or the crap thats in the bumble. I just feel that having a huge lump like that on your foot is somehow painful for my duck.. At least shes drinking water. I took the food out of her pen so she had more room to sit so im going to try the food again thismorning. thanks guys.
