Anyone ever had eggs shipped from overseas? I know there are a million hoops to jump through for live birds but what about eggs?
Reason I'm asking is that I was looking at eggs online and I see this person will ship to the US and really it's not any higher than what most charge for shipping eggs here. Just wondering if it's legal or not. Also I realize that the hatch rate probably wouldn't be that great but I would really like to get some of these and I haven't been able to find them here.

IDK if they would make it through customs and still be OK.

My personal experience having things come through customs is that it can be fast or it can take up to a month during busy times of the year (like around the holidays).

I'm sure it could be done but it wouldn't be easy - people get live animals through like dogs, horses, etc.

The thing you might have a problem with is that with an animal like a dog or horse they can make sure it doesn't have a disease by vaccinating it. The egg, the chick inside, could technically be ill. That could cause a big quarantine issue coming through.

They have diseases overseas that we don't have here right now. Some diseases pass through hatching eggs, hence the restrictions.

.... I never knew that diseases could be passed through hatching eggs. I always wondered why people put NPIP on ebay hatching egg auctions. Guess now I know.

Being NPIP does NOT mean they are free of diseases. It is just what they are free of at the time of the testings. It would take one little wild bird or perhaps a rodent to spread diseases. It don't take much. That is why I am not NPIP because of false security.

I agree with SpeckledHen, diseases they have right now, we don't have it yet. the parents of the stock would have to be tested and its very expensive for the flock owner to do it.

Robin is correct. NPIP doesn't test for the most common diseases of backyard poultry at all, not unless you pay extra money to have it done and those tests, like for Mycoplasmosis, are quarterly not yearly. NPIP is no guarantee of a disease-free flock, not by a long shot.

By the way, MG (Mycoplasma Gallisepticum) is one of the diseases which can pass through hatching eggs and it is probably THE most common disease of backyard poultry.

old thread but just a heads up, being NPIP doesn't mean doodoo about not getting sick eggs or chicks! My once very healthy flock now has MG and MS, also waiting on other results to come in for other diseases, and they came from NPIP certified sellers. Not all states require testing on all diseases that if caught are life long illnesses! Don't be like me and find out the hard way!
