Having trouble with sand....

I have sand in my 8'x12' run for 6 chickens and 3 ducks. However, the area around the ducks' water buckets is getting wet and staying wet. I am not sure how to handle this. I am wondering if I should create a 2x4 "sandbox" and fill it with river rock for the water bucket area. My only concern is how to clean it during the winter...

I am very open to suggestions!

We have sand in our coop and I put a tray under the waterers... like the one that would be in the bottom of a dog crate. That has helped a great deal and we can lift it out and clean it off whenever we need to.
