Hawk attack and I do mean hawk attack. GRAPHIC CONTENT

I third the opinion of keeping a very close eye on your injuries! That must've scared the poop out of you - I know I probably would need a change of pants. Keep it clean and use neosporin on it. That would probably be a very nasty infection if one set in.

This is a good reminder for me - I live about 5 miles from Hawk Mountain here in PA, right on the migratory pattern for many birds of prey. I think my new run will definitely be iron clad - so far, so good with the little run I have now.

True. Keep in mind that state laws (which can often be more lenient) do not apply, as hawks fall under federal protection. I know this is an issue in some places out West with wolves, where ranchers are not allowed to kill wolves, even if caught in the act of trying to kill their cattle.

My rooster is WONDERFUL, and so far I've not lost a single hen since I got him. He certainly won't fight off a hawk, but he is my "early warning system" which allows the hens to run to safety. However, a friend a few miles away free ranges in the middle of a field with no trees/shrubs. It's great for organic free-ranging, but he does loose a number of birds each year to hawks (even with several roos).

I second the comment on getting a tetanus shot if you haven't had one in the last several years. Better safe than sorry. So sorry your chicken was killed.

I'm sorry but ANY animal that attacks ME is going DOWN! We're not talking about sitting around shooting hawks flying around your chickens. This one attacked him!!! Come on.

I've had a hawk strike the aviaries of my pigeon pens while I was standing there, and one actually pursued a pigeon right to me as I stood with a broom in my hands. That turned into a big surprise for both of us. I have a friend who had his forearm pierced by a redtail--he developed a massive infectiion. As others have mentioned, keep an eye on those puncture wounds.
