Glad you live with a nurse and she has the right kind of alcohol. Tetanus is fatal 25-50% of the time and present in soil...living for many years as spores and survives huge flucuations in temperature. Sounds like one nasty microbe. Hope you get a tetanus booster shot if you are not sure when your last one was....Hawks have NASTY claws. (I hope the hawk that attacked you won't be able to do THAT ever again)

It's a shame that hawk broke his neck trying to get out of the coop.

I know right? I often wonder what ever became of that guy. Did he call a lock smith to get him out? All I know is I am not opening the door in fear of being attacked. The law strictly state we cant interfer with them. So i guess we will check on my coop in a month or so..............................
All silly stuff aside. The Hawk was only doing what he does naturally. I had the coop door opened so it could air out after disinfecting and cleaning it. Once I placed my body in the only exit the hawk had I am sure he was just trying to defend itself. Like grandma always said. Never push a coward into a corner. This was the devil of all hawks the Stealth bird. Sharp Shin. I will admit I am quite angry with myself. as any deaths could have been prevented. But I was lacking space. (Been doing 200 eggs per setting in staggered hatches) I have so many chicks to grow out I was trying to sell some of my breeds. I just let them free range in the day and locked them up in the brooder barn at night. Had I simply closed the gate and locked them into the chick yard instead i wouldnt have anything dead. I do have an outstanding rooster who has personally fought hawks. and alot of our hawks are native.
There is one lesson to be learned here I guess. When you live in a predator infested area wear chain mail leather gloves bullet proof vest and keep a stainless steel trashcan lid for a mini shield.......

That's the kind of nurse I like! Good sense and empathy all rolled into one package. She's a keeper!

I impaled my foot on a serated butcher knife a year ago checking on the barn cats kittens it was embedded into a matress and went threw my foot so I am good for my shots. Hawks dont carry diseases so to speak but they do carry God knows what on those talons. infection did try to set in but we made quick work of some antibiotics I had around here. and Just kept it cleaned its healing up fine now. there was no real damage done exept the infection and thats gone now.
