Well, I've owned chickens for several years now, but I've never had any problems with hawks until a little over a week ago. I'd left to go into town and when I came back, I was already missing one chick and saw another getting beaten up. Of course, I kicked into mama gear and chased the stupid hawk away like a mad woman.

I fixed up the visible cuts on the tiny Rhode Island rooster and sent him on his way. Flash forward two days.

I noticed that he'd been limping from day one when he got attacked, but he was dealing with it pretty well with the other chicks. However, for the last week, he's been unable to walk, so I separated him in a cage that's in the chicken's run. He's still alive, but I have no idea what happened to his leg. I'd hate to cull him, 'cause he's always been very friendly and is my favorite rooster from the flock.

I believe that he has a torn muscle or tendon in his leg, or he broke a bone near his leg seeing as it doesn't look like his actual leg bones are the problem. Maybe his thighs? He doesn't fuss at all when I try to move his legs, but he can't walk. He just flaps his way over to the food and water with his wings. His other cuts are almost completely healed. I can't keep him separated for his whole life. Can anyone give some advice? I think I'll give him a few more weeks and see where his is then...

I would give him some time. Chickens can heal pretty fast, but he may need to be in a crate in the coop for awhile to rest his leg. Give him some PolyViSol baby vitamin (no iron) 1 or 2 drop daily in a dropper. Scrambles eggs chopped up for some extra protein will help. Take him out periodically for some exercise and for you to check his progress (may be best if close to dark, so you can get him back in easily.)

He died. First chicken I've ever lost to injuries. He got sick on top of being unable to walk. RIP.

I was clipping wings this morning, 9:00am with my wolf/german-shepherd dog by my side, when a red tailed hawk decides to swoop down and attempt an attack at my flock. Of course, being big-bad Momma Hen, I successfully chased it away

But the fact is, I officially have a chicken hawk hanging around my house. Now, I know it's been posted before, but is there any way to protect against hawks without having to put an overhead fence in? 'Cause that's not happening. The hawk wasn't fazed by my being there either. Nor was he afraid of the dog. There's so much controversy on the CD's idea, that I'm not sure if it's even worth trying. This is the second attempt I've seen so far with hawks and my crew, and I'd prefer it was the last. Any tips out there?

Wait. This isn't the place to post this. I don't know how to delete it, so just pretend I didn't put that there XD
