Well, I've owned chickens for several years now, but I've never had any problems with hawks until a little over a week ago. I'd left to go into town and when I came back, I was already missing one chick and saw another getting beaten up. Of course, I kicked into mama gear and chased the stupid hawk away like a mad woman.
I fixed up the visible cuts on the tiny Rhode Island rooster and sent him on his way. Flash forward two days.
I noticed that he'd been limping from day one when he got attacked, but he was dealing with it pretty well with the other chicks. However, for the last week, he's been unable to walk, so I separated him in a cage that's in the chicken's run. He's still alive, but I have no idea what happened to his leg. I'd hate to cull him, 'cause he's always been very friendly and is my favorite rooster from the flock.
I believe that he has a torn muscle or tendon in his leg, or he broke a bone near his leg seeing as it doesn't look like his actual leg bones are the problem. Maybe his thighs? He doesn't fuss at all when I try to move his legs, but he can't walk. He just flaps his way over to the food and water with his wings. His other cuts are almost completely healed. I can't keep him separated for his whole life. Can anyone give some advice? I think I'll give him a few more weeks and see where his is then...
