Someone please help i don’t know what happened I just had let them out I have a camera that I have on the coop at all times otherwise I’m out there usually all day with them until they go In and are safe for the night, I would literally look at my phone every 5 second as I saw Kurt walking over into the open from the shelter of the deck and stairs he finally settled underneath the current cage/coop I have a few of them in but still I check so often the only time I couldn’t look at the feed instantly was when my phone screen would lock and I had to put my password in .. that happens he’s underneath the cage coop a few other birds are around him or have followed him over(he’s 1/2 Roos) the next time I looked st the screen everyone was gone in FLASH so I knew something had happened but I didn’t know what. I still don’t know exactly what happened, but here is what came of this sad day

First of all, don't blame yourself. Hawks are very agile hunters.

Second of all, your boy does not look that bad at all.

Bring him in and wash him up with warm soapy water and rinse well. If he is still bleeding, apply pressure to the area with a clean gauze for several minutes. Dab the wound with whatever disinfectant you have available: dilute betadine, chlorhexidine solution, Vetericyn, or other. I would then put a bit of blu kote followed by plain triple antibiotic ointment (no pain killers in it) on his injury.

If you have any Poultry Nutri-drench, give him a few drops and make sure he is eating and drinking on his own then return him to his flock.

He should heal just fine and have wonderful stories to tell his grandchicks some day.

ETA: Because you are in Fishkill, I would make sure he is dry before putting him back in the coop. If he is like mine, he will love a blow dry.

Thank you so much. I should’ve separated him earlier I believe some of the others pecked at him before and after first realized he was injured. Now there’s this one chicken that is like out for blood literally, she’s a jumpy little white leghorn hen and she was one of the birds Near Kurt(the injures rooster above) at the time when the sudden scatter happened. And wouldn’t leave her side (although I saw no pecking from her) after I discovered and was examining the injury. Also interestingly enough before the incidet she was always constantly on the look out for mealworms when I brought anything out she even found an old mealworm Treat bag somewhere( I have no idea where) and was pecking i found her in a corner pecking & scratching at it the other day. So the obvious reasoning behind that would be she’s craving/in need of more protein. Even though she’s been given a higher protein feed since it’s still cold and she’s just about wi weeks but hasn’t laid yet. Maybe she had a “peck” of Kurt’s earlobe? And is now wants to just get a nip at him any chance she can get even if that means she get pinned down by him? Because before this she was always the first one out of there and lowest in the pecking order in the coop with the roosters( or maybe mated with too much m/maybe just naturally skittish) but she would always be running away from Kurt not hoping back into his coop which is what she did saw it out the window so I ran outside by this time Kurt literally had her take feather stepped on so she could not move. I couldn’t tell if it had a fresh peck but I got her out anyway just because I don’t trust her right now and he needs to heal. Thank you for all your help and reassurances.
