Hawk attack

There are videos where Mongolians train these huge eagles to kill wolves/coyotes/foxes! Don't underestimate the strength of birds!

Something to consider (and never the perfect answer, by far) is to make sure that you have lots of hiding places in the run itself - bushy shrubs are ideal, but built structures work too. Also, do you (or can you) have a rooster? They're amazing at getting their girls to safety, and their eyesight is so much more keen than ours when it comes to spotting predatory possibilities from the air. :)
Funny you should mention it. I elevated a dogloo on cinder blocks in a corner of their outside pen to provide a hiding place. They can either get under the house or in the house too if they want. I asked my neighbor who has had chickens for many years his thoughts. He said chickens were too dumb to do either. Turns out, it is their favorite spot to hang out! I do have a roo. He is very young, but growing like a weed.

Where I live there are every kind of predator (no minks and such). Bird of prey are abundant. One day I opened my back door a there were two Harrion hawks one atop my wooden 6’ fence (goes all around my yard) and another standing on top of the roof of my run. I had never seen these type of hawks before they are huge! The hawk was so brazen that it didn’t move as I approached I had to throw a rock at it. Wonderful just one more predator that know where to find chickens.

Welcome to chickenry... Your neighbor might have been alluding to something I witnessed once..... that a hawk, can scare a chicken out from inside fort knox if it is able, the chickens will abandon their shelters. My chickens like to run into the bushes, but they will run right back out when the hawk flutters at them. Shelter is good no doubt. but chickens are pretty dumb about some things.
