Oh, Ashley, I am so very sorry for your loss.

I started reading this thread and was thinking that this might have a happy ending and was so sad to read that you lost her.

We have hawks that come by several times every day hoping to get one of my hens. I understand that they have to eat, too, but it's just so unfair - the chickens have no defenses against the hawk. I hope yours learn to run for cover as a result of this experience.

Thanks.I have no idea what exactly happened. All the other chickens were in the coop hiding. I don't know if she got so scared and was just running anywhere she thought she'd be safe or if the hawk grabbed her and took her to the other side of the creek where we found her. My boyfriend was out this morning and saw a hawk sitting in a tree close by. In the spring the already huge coop even bigger since my silkies will be big enough to go out. Then they can have a big run and netting over the top of it. I really hate that this happened but I know it does sometimes.

Sorry for your loss.

She must of had some internal injuries. A big run with netting is one of the better defenses from aerial predators.
