Hawks have been getting at my birds, it got its beak through the 1/2" hardware clothe and scalped 1 of my quail, thats after it killed 1 of my chickens from the outside of the chicken run (chicken was inside the run), do quail stand still when a predator comes? this has been the worst weekend for pets I really need a hawk deterrent My dh wont let me get a large dog, and now I fear for my chihuahua the hawks have become extremely bold and they don't fly off until we're right on top of them. what does anyone say about large cats would they deter a hawk?

I'm sorry about your chicken and quail loss.
I have heard of people hanging old CDs around their pens/runs to deter hawks-it might be worth a try.
Something else that helps, believe it or not, is to try to entice the crows to come around-they will chase off hawks.
Good luck to you!

thanks maybe i'll try some kind of foil flappers, the crows used to hang out on the telephone wires every morning I don't know where they went to. I'll see what a crows favorite food is. thanks for the suggestions.
the quail is still alive not sure for how long we separated it from the rest. I was at work when I told dh to remove the quail from the others because they would attack him he didn't believe me said he was watching them, and while on the phone he realized I was telling the truth. and removed it.
I really thought I was predator proof.

When ever I deploy a new pen, the local raper population has to test out it's defines. Since I use 1/2" HWC, not rice paper, they usually give up in about an hour or so. It's not without a cost, because at least one bird manages to boinc it's self to death, but the pen is usually left alone.

Those hawks are bold. I have a mama duck with a duckling living inside because we are having a freeze coming up (I live in a microclimate zone of Florida)...JJ do you get odd temps?? One min it was 80 and then the next it was 30! WOWZA! OK ok....But anywho....a hawk tried to take the duckling, the mama duck lunged after the duckling and I went for both....all are fine except the hawk hurt the mama duck

But she is fine now...I have come to the conclusion that I just have to keep an eye on EVERYONE...the hawks "tried" to enter the quail building but didn't make it...I have a dog out but one minute you see him helping and the next minute he is in his own world

I have the windchimes and cd windchimes now and the hawks haven't tried to come by but they may figure it out eventually...I have everyone in pens, no freerangers except the guineas, now those boogers can fend for themselves
