Yesterday, a red tail hawk attacked my hens while they were out. None were hurt, but badly freaked out. I scared the hawk away. Three of the hens went into the coop which I was cleaning at the time. I had not collected eggs yet. The three hens got into the nest boxes and started breaking the eggs. I stopped them and gathered the remaining eggs. Does anyone know why they would do this??? They layed great today??? Never seen this before. Any ideas???

My friend (who breeds rabbits) said that a mama rabbit will eat the babies if it feels threatened... Could it be that is why they were breaking their eggs? Just a guess.

I've never had that (or heard of that before) happen either, and I have had more than my share of hawk attacks this year. are you sure they weren't just panicked and trying to get away from the hawk?
