I'm just heartbroken! A hawk got one of my call ducklings this morning. I hatched a bunch earlier this year and kept 1 pair for my son. They're his "rubber duckies" he loves them. Well...a hawk just got 1 and was working on the other when they guineas let us know. So....1 is alive with some feathers missing, but the other was dead. Of course, it was my favorite. DS understands farm life and chicks die sometimes and all that. He just enjoys these ducks so much! I'm just sick about it. I'm glad the guineas were out to 'sound the alarm' the chickens were all hiding under the pine trees. We had cleared the dead branches out earlier this year.....I'm really glad it makes good hiding spots!

DH grabbed a shotgun and went after it. He says it had to be 3 feet long! He couldn't get close enough to it, but he did find 3 nests. So that's 3 trees that are coming down!

So sorry to hear of your loss. I know it is soooo hard to lose them (and sometimes hurts for several days or even weeks). The hawks and eagles have taken a terrible toll here this year. I remember the good old days when I used to marvel at seeing the bald eagles and now I just get a sense of dread.

I'm sorry! I had a hawk kill my favorite hen several years ago. I love hawks, but it is really sad when they kill your pets. It's good that you saved the other call though--thank you guineas!

Its illegal to shoot them in the US as well. Its also illegal to mess with their nests. I know it sucks to lose some fowl to hawks but that's why I raise some extras. If your not willing to lose some to predators then you need to keep them locked up or guard them with a dog. You can't expect predators like hawks that have a nest full of hungry chicks to pass up a small, clumsy domestic duck or chicken.
