Hawk got my favorite hen!

I'm sure you are allowed to protect your property from any pest regardless if the are a protected one. Look in to it

Not when the 'pest' is a federally protected species. You can apply for a permit, but it is an expensive and difficult process.

I am glad birds of prey are federally protected. Considering how many people are so trigger happy and don't know how to secure their coops, or cover them with netting, it is necessary. Also, nature abhors a vacuum. Kill one, and another will move in. Remember, it is migration season. Many more birds of prey are moving through an area as they head south. So it means more transient aerial predators.

My birds free range. Have I lost the occasional bird to a predator? Absolutely! But that is a risk I take letting my domesticated animals have the freedom to wander. Free ranging is always a gamble.

You sure when we were in Alaska the rule was broken if you see any anamial destroying property ie attack live stock. This applied to wolfs and brown bear which are protected too

Yes true, certain laws apply to folks that just kill things for the heck of it. The good thing is that Stormy did his duty yesterday and got rid of the hawk issue. I didn't have to go shoot anything. Stormy is pretty good at predator control when he is in the right area. The girls got to have a good meal at the same time. The younger ones will be in for 1 more week then once they are back out by then there shouldn't be any more hawks around the area, I hope.

Odd ball is eating on her own, preening herself, and trying to stand up on her own. I think in another week or so she will be ready to go in with little man, and that way no one will bother her.

Seeing a animal in the act I said . You can't just go killing it because you think it will attack or had attacked or killed something. So the laws doesn't allow people to go kill things for the heck of it.

All my breeding pens are covered...it doesn't matter....the raptures are brilliant, if they can find a small hole their in.....over the years I've had 2 get in.....I called the game warden in Bastrop county to come and get the hawk and relocate it.....she laughed and told me their is really nothing she could do...they were migrating and there was no where she could take it. so when I catch them in the pens I open the gate and let them out to hunt else where......they are just doing what they do..... hunt....I love my peeps.....and I hate it when I loose some to predators...and yes....It seems to be my favs that they get.......~Charm1704.

I don't know about bears or wolves or anything like that, but the Migratory Bird Treaty act is very clear - except for a handful of species (crows, grackles, and some invasives), you can't kill any migratory bird without a permit. It doesn't matter what you see it doing - you need to get the permit.
