Hawk got one of my roosters, and I got him back!

We have 2 young live oak trees that we did not trim - they have grown to be more like bushes than trees. The chickens can run under them for cover. We also have a small homemade metal building with a dirt floor as our chicken coop and I leave the door open during the day for them to roam inside as needed.

It is very hard to avoid hawks if you have no trees/shelters for chickens to retreat to.

When I ran out into the field, flailing and yelling, the hawk flew away, and the rooster ran towards me like a puppy. I could NOT believe he was alive!!!! He was missing a large amount of feathers. Apparently they pluck their victims before killing them. :( He looks great now. I'll try to post pics.

I am friends with all animals (yes even the fisher that wiped out half of my ex-battery hens) and am extremely disturbed by people killing the poor things!
