A hawk swooped down at my girls this morning about a minute after letting them out of their coop. They all ran under my deck, and all 9 of them were accounted for. Close call I thought. I just went to check on them again and noticed one of my Brahmas just sitting there. She went to stand up and her left leg is injured. She's holding it up. Theres no blood and she's eating. Should I just leave her be? They all hang out under the deck for most of the day and it's like a second coop. They have food, water, nest boxes and plenty of hiding places. My gut feeling tells me not to seperate her from her siblings. Am I doing the right thing? I'm new to all this and have yet to experience my first egg.

I'd try to get hold of her and look closely at the leg. You shouldn't need to separate her unless there is blood that they start pecking at. It could be a minor injury that will respond to a little common sense first aid, or even no treatment at all. Lots of info on here if you find something worse, like a broken leg, but let's hope you don't.

I tried checking again, no blood or wound of any sort. Her leg and foot are fully feathered so I thought I may have missed something. She's able to place her foot down and limp around. Hopefully it's not broken.

I can't imagine she'd be walking on a broken leg or hip. Maybe it's a sprain or strain of some sort. I'd just keep an eye on her, make sure the others don't start picking on her. Unless they do, I agree, she'll be much happier with her buddies.

I went to carry her across the yard to the coop, and she was already there with the rest of the gang. I lifted her up into the coop as it's 3 feet off the ground, thinking she would just remain on the floor for the night. Well she managed to hop up on a perch, then made her way up to the top perch. I think she's going to be okay as long as she she don't fall off, lol. Thanks so much for replying to my post. ; )
