One thing I found out is that having black chickens keep hawks away. I have 7 Black Jersey Giants. They look like crows and ravens which hawks compete for food with. So the hawks stay away. Black Austrlorps work too. Any black chicken should work. I have heard hawks cry but they haven’t come down on my flock when the free range. So you could buy black chickens. Or keep some Dominiques. Their feather pattern looks like a hawk so real hawks will leave them alone too.

I also have high winds at times so the umbrella thing won’t work. But if it works for you go for it!

IMHO, the color of the poultry is inconsequential in warding off hawk attacks. Hawks aren't stupid when it comes to prey.
Most species of hawks can fly so high that they are merely a speck in the sky, but at that altitude with one eye looking forward and the other looking down, they can spot a small rodent moving through the tall vegetation.
With that in mind, I can't imagine how they can't differentiate between a crow and a chicken regardless of color.
