Hawk injured my hen

Yesterday morning my hen was attacked by a hawk. By the time we got to her all we found was a pile of feathers and blood. The hawk came back and sat watching us. Today our hen came back and although she is eating and drinking fine, we noticed she has a huge hole in her left side under her wing, is limping on her left leg and her left eye is droopy. I’ve separated her from the flock and have given her fruits and water with electrolytes in it. I have spray for wounds on chickens but because of the size of the hole I am afraid to spray it. I feel like I can see her organs, not bloody or a laceration. Anything else I can do to help her?

It may help to trim away feathers around the wound to see if there are organs visible. 2% chlorhexidene, saline, or Vetericyn wound spray can be used to clean the wound. Plain Neosporin ointment can be applied when dry twice a day. Leave it open to air. Keep her separated. A wire dog crate with a cover on clean old towels is good. Food and water in the crate. Try offering some wet and dry chicken feed, scrambled egg, tuna, etc. Does she seem to be in shock?

Thank you. She seems to be okay as far as eating and drinking but I am trying to let her rest as much as possible. I have microcynAH spray but I’ve never used it. That’s what I’m scared will hurt her if I sprayed it on her organs if that’s what I see.

Microsyn AH is very good to use. If you see any signs of infection, such as redness, a bad odor, or pus, get chlorhexidene 2% spray on Amazon. Hibiclens from your drug store is 4% chlorhexidene, and can be rinsed or mixed with water.

Thank you for these tips! and where to get them!
