looks like a falcon to me

... sorry for your loss, it is hard to loose one of the girls..

about the comment "shoot it with something other than a camera" ????? what???
how about keeping the domestic animals locked up where wild animals cant eat them????...

mine were locked up and a weasel still got to them.

..and ACTUALLY, if my birds had been free ranging that day..they would have survived!!...they were trapped in their run with no way to get away from it....if they were free ranging the weasel would not have been able to catch them..they could have flown away or something....

I think the OP is feeling grief and not looking for a fight, could we hold the questionable comments. And Hawks kill more than chickens and they have on occasion attacked humans.

A hawk's advantage is his dive speed. They can kill birds much larger than they are by surprise. Then they just eat what they want on the spot. Once on the ground, they lose the advantage and can be successfully taken on by the rooster in charge.

yeah, if you have a rooster that is worth anything...mines a sissy!

...i think with my last weasel attack my white rock hen went after it.(shes my dominate hen in the flock...)..she was bitten on her wattle..but she survived....i REALLY have to get a REAL roo....really...

hey now.. i did not say i was looking for a fight... i DID SAY sorry for your loss. it is hard... i do know the loss of your pets to wild animals and i said my "sorries" to the person that lost the chicken...
awesome picture by the way...

but someone basicaly said "kill it" (the hawk) .. that is what upsets me.. these wild creatures were here first,, we moved into their houses and took away their hunting areas.. i have shot a killed my fair share of predators,, but ONLY the ones coming into my yard every single night.. killing night after night...
to shoot and kill a hawk over one chicken upsets me

I saw that but we all can get along with different opinions. I counted 5 hawks today, they have a problem with my chickens as I have blocked their dive area with my wife's clothes line. There is NO other bird in the air they are wiping out the native species as they can't get at my chickens. My yard full of cardinals has all been wiped out. They are overabundant and will attack humans and children when they can not find any other food. They have been known to take small pets. Mine are not even supposed to be here, black hawks are not native to this part of the country. Like coyotes they are growing and their range increasing. They are very large and capable of killing cats and dogs. I have a MIL who was attacked and her head ripped to the skull. Her only crime to cause the attack was holding her parrot to give it some fresh air. Or possibly just her hairdo.

Every person has their own way to handle a situation and the importance they bestow on their pets. Yes it is a chicken but some chickens cost over $1,000. That is a large investment to have killed for just a few bites by a hawk. Personally I did not invest my time and energy to feed the predators. And cooping up my chickens 24 hours a day seems very cruel to me, but that is just my opinion. No offense intended.
