yes .. we can have all different opinions.. thats what makes this country great!!!!

i understand ALL of your points,,,, but....
#1 if you do have chickens that cost $1,000 each then YES they should be kept penned up AND under lock and key.. with hotwire and guard dogs all around them:D
#2 that is NOT a black hawk.. any predator that gets out of control should be shot/trapped/relocated that includes the 2 leggers
#3 it only killed ONE chicken.. if it kills everyday and relys on chicken meat.. then YES it need to be "taken care of"

Sorry Faverolle for your loss.

I've lost my fair share of chickens to Red Tail hawks.
Do hawks come flying down so hard and hit their target that they stun them? I have lost several in the past to hawks, and that's what it seemed like to me. As soon as I'd approach it (arms swinging in the air) it would either just fly off or take the chicken with it. Saved a barred rock hen once from a hawk but she had huge torn skin on her back (we super glued her skin back together).
Again, sorry....I know how you feel, I've been there several times.

I am sorry for your loss. I admit though...that is a beautiful falcon. Also why it is smaller than the chicken...they are so fast a chicken rarely can get away or hide.

1 I think it is each individuals right to raise their chickens and care for them as they see fit.
2 No offense but how would you know it is not a black hawk. Coyotes are not native to NC either, they used to be a just a west US predator. I saw the hawks and have lived in Texas. They ARE black hawks, but let's not get to far over it.
3 They have killed 3 of my chickens and that one in the picture will continue as long as it CAN. Cardinals, blue birds, and in some states endangered species are being killed by hawks. It became a pest at the first chicken.
4 though I am distressed at the loss of the wild birds I don't plan on anything other than protecting my flock. Because the poster may want to shoot a hawk does not mean he will. Everybody is feeling frustration as the attacks keep coming and feel the need to vent. Sometimes it helps to say it even if you don't mean it.

I'm sorry for your loss -- we lost several chickens to hawks last year until we got a pair of Great Pyrenees pups to live among the flock (we have close to 80 chickens).

That is one fantastic picture. Can you upload the full-size version somewhere?

Now, a question for those who brought it up: Are there really people who would pay $1000+ for a chicken?

I have not paid that much but I know people that have. These are winning show birds though that go for that kind of money.

Master S.M.C :

How did it manage to take out your hen

looks like a falcon to me

Coopers hawk.

I let some of my birds free range. I have my dogs outside with them as well as several sharp eyed chickens so there is usually no problem but it's been a tough winter up here.
