Hawk stalking chickens! Help!

This is horrible since we did see one the other day - my biggest fear i thought is the coyotes the size of german shepherds that jump my fences.
Unfortunately, there are a ton of predators out there and they would all like to have a free lunch. Next time you see a sparrow or something go out and try and catch it. Then try and catch one of your chickens. Which one would you prefer to try and catch?

Predators are the same way. So yes, you DO have to worry about coyotes. And foxes. And dogs. And... obviously I could go on and on. Your best bet is a tight coop and covered run.

The best defense against hawks is to attract and have crows around. They are natural enemies and cries will harass and kill a hawk if given the chance.

Real nice - thanks for all the horror stories
If you want to be sure you never lose a bird then keep them in a fully enclosed run. Not much else will prevent hawks or any other predator. The truth is everything loves a chicken dinner (including chickens).

You have to weigh your local risk to predators vs the benefits of letting your hens free range. Everyone's risk is different, as well as how everyone views losses.

Good to know - we have a huge amount of crows which I figured they would try to hurt the chicks. We are on acreage so it's really hard to control the land
