Unfortunately, there are a ton of predators out there and they would all like to have a free lunch. Next time you see a sparrow or something go out and try and catch it. Then try and catch one of your chickens. Which one would you prefer to try and catch?
They never carry mine away, even bantams. They eat them right where they kill them. Owls carry them away, though, IME.
If you want to be sure you never lose a bird then keep them in a fully enclosed run. Not much else will prevent hawks or any other predator. The truth is everything loves a chicken dinner (including chickens).
