Hawks Nesting in our Pecan tree, How do we get rid of them.

And this is clear too. ANY disturbance of a hawk or it's nest is a FEDERAL offense, carrying a heavy fine and jail time as penalties.

And I wouldn't even suggest it on here or you might have unwelcome visitors--which, BTW and IMHO, you would deserve.

I would feel blessed. That looks like a special and somewhat magical bird, a protector of sorts. No doubt it has scoped the area carefully and decided your place is an excellent place to protect.

You must have a great place to live. I've read that hawk-vision is amazing. You should know it's probably been watching you, your family, your birds very carefully and made its decision soundly. I think its a sign that YOU and YOUR HOME are something good; your place is new-home-attractive for very good reasons!

I like this idea. The hawk chose you because it thought that you would not hurt it or it's chicks.

I would like to see pictures of hawk family life. Would make for a very interesting thread that could de-demonize hawks in the eyes of at least a few poultry keepers.

When I was growing up we had a pair of Red Shouldered Hawks that nested every year in the trees in our side pasture,. about 300 feet from the barn and the house,. in all the years they were there they never too a single chicken or our toy poodle, both of which roamed freely. they ate rabbits and squirrels like crazy though and once we saw one headed to the nest with a big ole opossum,.. it was straining but it got it in the nest,.

I looked up these red shouldered hawks, the Cornell University site says they're the most vocal hawks.

so, you got something special. See if you can load us a video to watch!

I sat outside near our chicken run and the pair came to visit. They are really neat to watch. I won't be chasing them off, they have a interesting squawk, and look like a very pretty bird. @6chickens in St. Charles; mom was wondering if you have Native American in you. She was thinking the same thing you had stated, and we have a small portion of Native American in us.
I will try to get more pics of the pair, the nest isn't close to our home, but maybe they'll bring their young to visit later this season.

I surely hope this was tongue in cheek and not a serious suggestion. No matter how you feel about something you should not advocate illegal activities on a public forum such as this.

Who knows? We're American, both sides of the family have mysteries and missing geneology and orphanages and travelling salesman, foreign immigrants and who knows what.

Our local hawks have used our hill for "flight school" every spring. Its darling. The babies launch out of the tree, all the time screaming OMG OMG OMG OMG and crash land into the side of our hill. Its just right for "flight school". They are very clumsy the first few days of flying, they look a little like a cat that's been tossed off a high place, with their claws grabbing for air...

We witnessed their first chipmunk catch on the side of our hill too, all the time screaming hysterically about it.

And chattering to their parents over and over and over. Maybe hawk kids have ADHD too.

Oh that is Great, I'd love to see the chicks taking their first flight from the nest. By the looks of it this pair have a nest northeast of us, I watch them fly that direction in the late afternoon. But they have been hanging around our area for the past 2 days. Now that we know they won't bother our small dogs I'll be watching for them every day to see how the interact in this area. As soon as I get the video camera set up I'll try and get some video of them.

Do you really like the pecan tree?? I think I would cut it down at least prune some limbs.
We just lost a guinea to a Red Tail today in the middle of the afternoon, with my husband on the front porch and not 10 min after I put all my hens up for the day.
I only leave them out if I am outside. The quineas we leave out but not any more....
The quinea was larger than my dog which is a maltipoo. I would fear for the dog.
There does not seem to be a shortage of Red Tail Hawks around here. Maybe Chickens and Guineas need some federal protection.
But hawks are beautiful and I couldn't hurt one but I sure don't like them.
