Hawks? So What Do you Do?

So, by your logic, we should all ignore the laws we don't like and do as we please? Just because 'someone' - lawmakers, in your opinion - break laws that you consider more serious? Yep, that makes your arguement right, I guess. Darn! I never thought of it that way. :th

I completely agree. My trees go down to the ground giving optimal protection. They are not always under these trees and are exposed to predators.

Here's my dog taking a turn watching the flock out in the open.

There's no way I'm breaking the law because someone else did. It wouldn't fly well in court. In my city you can not shoot protected birds even if they are after your livestock. I paid over a thousand dollars just on my run, but the hens would rather be free.

Well that's if they catch you,you are correct,I don't think it makes sense to feed all the hawks and stuff and just give them your livestock, first off all I am getting at,these thieving liberals need to protect us,When do you draw the line, what about the lambs that the Eagles kill Millions of dollars in each year in Wyoming and Montana? I know for fact they killed them in the 70's and 80 and 90's by the truck load! Granted not all hawks kill chickens but given the chance they might. I am just simply for the country guy or gal wanting to raise their stuff, but I will protect my farm and livestock that's a fact, its called responsible in my book.I don't cuss the ones that don't tho.and no I hadn't killed any hawks!

I don't think anyone should break the law,but I am sick and totally fed up with our GOVERNMENT law makers breaking them and NO ONE say they don't.Oh my just think what's done everyday that goes on that's a total COVER up!!! If we all knew everyone would be in a total RIOT,well not everyone cause a lot don't care but be honest about this, didn't mean to get everyone in an uproar, just trying to make a point, the little guy and gals get took while the big boys do as they please, for fact!!

I don't understand why they are protected since they are so abundant. I can understand an eagle, but not a hawk. I would never turn anyone in for shooting one either. I'm sure my neighbor would take one out.

Its just like a police man speeding or breaking the law. I do understand your post and frustration. We have so many hawks living in my own backyard. If it was a hawk that killed my hen, I can not kill it back. If it was a fox, then I will find it. I'm training my dogs to fox hunt, well I'm going to try anyways. I hate hawks. I would not be sad to see them go. If the DNR can help me, I'd love to call them. I see at least 5-6 pairs of hawks usually hunting in pairs everyday!

Even though this seems to be more of a political statement and really has nothing to do with protecting one's chickens from hawks, I'm going to chime in. I choose to free range my chickens. I live in the country, and we have an abundance of hawks and other birds of prey. My chickens have plenty of cover, but I guess it's still a risk. I've never - in all my years of chicken raising - lost a chicken to a hawk. Fox, coyote, skunk, coon... yes. Never a hawk. After reading through the entire thread, the source of OPs rage and fury seems directed more at politicians, and less at the hawks. Larry, I hope you can find some peace in your life. Sure, there are things that happen here in the US that I don't agree with, but I choose to live here because I still think it's the best place in the world to be. If I ever quit thinking that way, I hope I have what it takes to either do my best to make changes, or find me a place in Mexico or Canada.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to me to kill a $10,000 bird to protect a $2 bird.

Fines can be tens of thousands of dollars and jail time is a possibility. A $50 roll of poultry net is a lot cheaper and it works all the time and not just for the few hours a day that you are standing out in your yard holding a rifle. Even considering that you apparently consider your time to be worth absolutely zip.
If you find a net that covers my run for $50 or even a $100 I'll buy it. I just do what's it takes to keep my stock safe. I help my neighbor dig holes all the time. I spend my time the way i want. I am retired and enjoy seeing after my stuff.
