Hawks

I lost 3 this week including 2 rare roosters. I finally attached a 10x10 dog run to it and put stucco wire on top with loosely tied barbed wire. now if he lands on top he will be in for a tangle hopefully.

I had a goshawk come and nearly take one of my sizzle roosters. He dropped him, went back to get him and was scared off by my FIL. I have since penned up my crested birds. My other chickens can see them coming and run for cover. I think their happiness during free range is worth the risk. With all the roosters I have sounding the call, they almost always get away.

Little rooster that was picked up and dropped is remarkably unscathed. I'm sure he has PTSD though..

So glad to hear your little one wasn't seriously injured or killed, We are seeing more hawks right now big red tail flying above our property yesterday. My ducks and geese won't leave their fenced in areas. most of the chickens are still going out all but my small bantams. Food is getting scarce and not much cover since the leaves are off the trees means hawks and everything else will be looking at our flocks. .

It was crazy! There are feathers everywhere, but not a single scratch on my sizzle! He even looks to have all his feathers. Weird..

My flock is on high alert. There was a crow that landed in the trees today, and everyone ran for cover. That's a good sign. I want them to be aware. They dash from the woods to the barn, as if the ground is hot.

The bantams are just too easy for the hawks. I'm not too worried about the standard birds. They know where to go for shelter.

Sorry for the others' losses, so sad when we care so much. When that Hawk got mine yesterday, he had come right into the Coop there were Hawk feathers everywhere. My coop is made from a shed I converted, it's about 9' X 13" and he must have just swooped right in and had at it. Most of the other girls were out in the yard but the Bantams often stay in the Coop. I feel like such a failure not being able to have protected the three I lost.

I'm so sorry Summer Rose for your loss, hawks can be pretty brazen when hungry, I've noticed even when regular small birds fly over head going to the wild bird feeders the chickens will duck and run. They are pretty wary right now. The hawk got 3 at one try? thats sad. and your not a failure these things happen .

Thank goodness your sizzle had some feathers to spare.

This afternoon was so pleasant I sat outside for a while with the flock, everyone was doing their thing when out of no where comes probably close to 15 crows screaming and took off after a big red tail, I was so busy watching the sky wasn't paying any attention to where the birds were. when i looked to see they were all standing around me looking up at the sky too. They had made a beeline for the fence and safety when they heard the crow alarm. Them crows are worth their weight in gold.
