Hawks

You could shoot the bird if it's not a protected species. I would use a pellet gun which isn't illegal to shoot in town. Wait till the hawk is on the ground or somewhere that doesn't have anything behind it.

I don't live in town, I'm in the country. I just have neighbors in sight who would probably be able to see everything if they were looking out their windows when we shot the hawk.

You can look further into it, but (at least in NC) it's a heavy fine if you get caught shooting one.

I've never tried to CD's but I know people that swear by it.
The birds don't like the light reflecting off it messes with their eyes and they stay away.

I think you could get a heavy fine here too... from what others have said in my area.

I was thinking about it, and the CD's would really only work if it's sunny. So on the days like today when it's cloudy they wouldn't really do much good.

I've tried doing that with mine, but I can't ever get them all to go back inside. I've tried calling with the treat can and everything. Some of my girls are incredibly stubborn. :/

Ya it's a production! That is FOR SURE. I'm just glad our fence is tall and our neighbors can't see us.

Yes, I have a rooster. But he is not very good at protecting the hens yet. I just recently got rid of my other rooster because he was being such a bully to the one I still have. The rooster I have now spent his whole life hiding and not spending any time with the hens, so he is just now learning the responsibility of protecting the hens.

Case in point. It's amazing that it does work for some and not others.
I belong to a local backyard group and there is one lady in the group that had the fishing line crisscross with cd's and lost all six of her birds over a month period to a redtail with this method.
