I think the 6 chick rule, was mainly to dissuade people from buying an Easter chick or two and then dumping them out when they got past the cute stage.
I am also from Virginia. Western Loudoun county. I have a small flock. I would recommend Barred rocks, partridge rocks, and brahmas. I have two hens from each of these breeds. This is their first winter which has lower temps than normal. My hens are doing very, very well. They are handling the extreme cold without any supplemental heat in the coop. No frostbite. They are laying eggs everyday, which indicates that they are not stressed. I have been very pleased with the 1-day old chicks I got from MyPetcchicken.com. The chicks are now about 6 months old.
I also know a local breeder of Auracanas and cream legbars, if that appeals to you. They lay green and blue eggs. I will likely expand my flock with a couple of blue/green egg layer breeds. I plan to purchase chicks or pullets locally.
Since I also have a partridge rock rooster, I will likely have chicks this Spring. PRs and PR hybrids. The rooster is also 6 months old, but he already producing fertilized eggs. I get an average of 2-3 eggs a day right now. The rate will likely increase after February.
I am sure you are looking forward to starting your flock. We just moved here last year, I can relate. I will be moving my coop this Spring and building a new, larger run for it.
