what are the hay or sawdust for? nesting? floor covering? coop or run flooring?

i have wood shavings for coop flooring and nest box filler. i have a covered run that has a 5-6" deep sand base. their outside uncovered run is just plain old dirt.

hay/straw (from what i hear) can impact a chicken's crop it they try to eat it. it can also harbor mites.

sawdust? well, my chickens make enough dust of their own - so i would now recommend adding dust of any kind.

Wood stove pellets. They are super absorbent, clean and fresh. They do their best work wet. Fluffs up and becomes a very nice sawdust. I have used the pellets in next boxes and on the ground. I've switched to grass hay in the next boxes but I keep plenty of bags of the wood stove pellets around for the bottom of coops or anywhere I have mud. They are like magic!
