HD, If you could do anything different what would it be as far as housing,chickens etc. ??

Hello I'm not new to the desert my family and I have lived here almost 10 years now. I have wanted chickens forever, I had them as a kid and wanted to have them for my kids...so I'm finally getting them. I am curios as far as what should I be aware of living here in the HD that I haven't thought of, hot days and cool nights are the obvious concerns. What else?? I am going to be using an unused dog run any info is helpful, Thank you in advance.
