HE Washers - Love? Hate? Opinions?

We got a Frigidaire HE over a year ago and I love it-- the cycles are very long but it uses *much* less water, and we're on a well so that matters a lot. We have hard water but the clothes get clean anyway, and we are still using the FIRST container of laundry detergent that we bought. So little goes in with each wash that it's lasted 14 months or so at 6-8 loads/week! We're all pretty small around here so we don't generate a ton of laundry now that the diaper years are behind us.

I line dry on the opposite side of the house from the goats

. For winter, the cellar has 100 feet of line looped over four pulleys set 2 feet apart at each end. This does the job nicely-- stuff that needs to be dry sooner gets hung on the side closest to the furnace. The only time I got really behind was this spring when it was too warm for the boiler to ever kick on and it rained for three weeks straight. Otherwise we're going on 2 years with this system and it's working great!

My dryer depends on the weather. I'm so old fashion I use a line.

I always hang clothes on the line as well, but with this wet year, I have been forced to use the dryer far more than I would like to.

ETA: I have noticed that my clothes come out drier with the new washer than they did in the old one, so it does take slightly less time to dry them in the dryer.

Well, we ended up getting a Kenmore HE. Sears had the model I wanted, marked down to $499 from $629, so I'm all excited. It'll be here next Tuesday! Woohoo!

Blessings-

I have the LG HE...

the washer.... dryer on the other hand.. its ok...

I line dry as much as i can the heavy stuff. I find if i try and dry my queen comforter in the dryer i will have to take it out and turn it a few times. When I trry and do queen sheets and say a few t shirts the shirts get caught in the pockets of the fitted sheet and are damp at the end of the cycle.

i went from 7-10 loads a week to 3-4

the one downside of the washer... if you dont use the HE or a low sud low residue soap you will get the build up in the soap tray or suds coming out the wazoo

Have that one too. Bought it last year and I love it!

downside is that the dryer takes a bit longer than my old dryer. Not sure why it takes longer.

I've had front loaders for years, but I currently HATE my Bosch. Any repairs needing to be made have to be done by a certified repair man... and there's like ONE in the whole state and you have to pay for travel fees etc... I may as well buy a new washer for the $ to repair

I got some fabric softener balls, and wondering if I can use them for powdered detergent. Or just throw the powder on top of the clothes and slam the door shut and go?

I have a front-load LG that will take 10 pairs of jeans on 4 gallons of water and I never even know it's running.

LOVE IT!!!!

I don't use fabric softener, but white vinegar in the softener reservoir instead. I have a dryer fabric softener bar in the dryer. I line dry sometimes. There is nothing like this machine. It's heaven.

how do you like those bars?... I was told by my extended warranty folks that the will void my warranty so I have not tried them *yet*

The dryer bar will void your warranty!? That's preposterous!

I love them. You have the power to forget all about fabric softener except once or twice a year- and WE DO LOTS OF LAUNDRY!! I have teen daughters and a hubby who works outside...and I'm always kneeling in chicken-poop...so we wear our clothes out washing them. The bars are great.
