Head Room

I don't think there is such a thing as "too big" in the world of chicken housing. You don't have to keep the coop warm inside, just dry and not drafty (unless you have breeds of chickens that are very susceptible to cold).

The only thing about buying a prefab shed is that you do have to retrofit it to meet the needs of chickens: primarily adding suitable ventilation (and windows for light, if the shed doesn't have any already).

Our coop is a shed style, 4 x 4 foot, and about 6 ft high at highest point.
We only have five hens but we see now that it's not comfortable or functional for us humans to maneuver around in.
Next coop will be bigger and taller. I'm only 5'2" but I'm always smacking my head on the top of door opening.

In that sense, first plan for human functionality, then think about the chickens. It's awkward to get in and clean a tiny space.

Thanks for all the comments you guys!
I was hoping to build 6 foot high before I started the arch of the coop.
So, maybe 7 or so tops(?)
I just was unsure if there was any type of rule as far as how high you should be...
I mean chicken houses are pretty tall inside but they have a lot of large equipment, too.
They also pack them in like poor sardines so you never know!
Does anyone know if cochins like to perch at night?
Thanks!
