Hi, I am a new member with one group of 3 hens and a rooster who is a sweetie, and another of 2 pullets new to the flock. We have a small ranch in NM with horses, dogs, cat, all who get along well. My problem is that the rooster, while gentle, rubs the back of the chickens raw. We added the 2 pullets hoping that would "spread the love" but they are not mature yet, and he leaves them alone. What can I do to care for the hens backs?

They actually make and sell 'hen saddles'. Try an on site search for more information on them. You can also trim the rooster's spurs and toenails and/or separate him from the hens until they regrow their feathers.

X 2 on Sourland, a hen saddle is the way to go and you can purchase them from the Buy-Sell-Trade Trend or e-bay also or you can segregate him for a couple of weeks and he would just hate that ......

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

You are from in New Mexico? Here here....south central mountains!! Where abouts are you?

Sorry you are having issues. The proper ratio of rooster to hens is 1 to 8. And yes, you can use hen saddles on the girls to protect their backs. Here is a link to a place you can get them...

Good luck with your flock and welcome to ours!

Good luck with your poultry raising adventures, and I hope you find everything you need to know. Don't forget to take a look at BYC's very useful learning center (If you haven't already)! The learning center as well as the forum should answer your questions! There is always something new to learn! Glad to have you here! See you around with the flock.

Hen saddles protect the back and allow the skin to heal and feathers to regrow. Some hens really enjoy wearing them.

If you have no intention of selling fertile eggs or hatching them, you don't need to have a rooster. Hens will lay eggs regardless.

Welcome to BYC! You've received some good counsel from the other BYC members. Good luck on the healing of your hens' backs.
