Mash is like a half way house between a whole grain and a crumble here in the UK. The problem is that there is a lot of powder in a mash and of course there are still quite a few pieces of grain that can be picked out. Feeding the mash wet or fermented twice a day would be the way to do it. Since they have plenty of space to roam and forage, it is not like they need feed available all day to keep them from getting bored. I would give them no more than they can clean up in 10 mins of a wet or fermented mash twice a day. Fermenting is ever so easy by the way. Basically just soaking it and stirring it and leaving it loosely covered at room temp. for about 3 days stirring daily until it starts to bubble and smell yeasty. Then scoop some out for them, add some more mash and water to the bucket, stir, cover and come back when you need to give them more.

You could also measure out about 1/3-1/2 cup of feed per each bird you have and feed only that amount each day.
Do you have a lot of birds?

Empty out your feeder tonight.
Start tomorrow by measuring 1/2 cup x 18 which equals about 9 cups of feed.
Only put out that much and see if they eat it all.

I need to start fermenting...I make and consume a lot of fermented goodies for myself and the kids - husband doesn’t trust me though, thinks I might poison him with my “experiments” ...I should do more for the ladies! Especially since Tractor Supply seems permanently out of the Flock Raiser pellets so I can only get the crumble - which wastes feed when the numnuts dig around in it - looking for what I couldn’t tell you. Something magical at the bottom of the bowls I guess.

You could even just soak the crumbles for a few minutes before you feed it out and that will help with the waste.

I certainly could! And should. I think I am in denial that TSC keeps not having pellets...this particular one seems to have trouble keeping what I want in stock. Usually it’s the Omega-3 Layena they are out of. My ladies don’t like the regular Layena as much.

Do you have any other feed stores near by?
