I was just about to post and tell you to put a wire apron around the perimeter of the run because terriers are great diggers and very persistent hunters. If it makes you feel better, people have discovered their Chihuahuas and little doxies are just as lethal to chickens - who knew?
I usually tell chicken folks, dogs+ chickens = dead chickens. You never hear of a chicken killing a dog. Some just start wanting to play - they consider them as squeaky toys and once the chick stops squeaking (dead) the dog grabs another one. Even very docile larger dogs can kill them just by accidentally sitting on or pawing at one
My friend's pek-a-poo ripped out her first chickens tail feathers. She gave him a major tonue lashing and the dog never tried again. In fact her 5 house pet chickens torment the heck out of him and chase him out of his own bed and feeding dish. She thinks its funny, I don't. The dog is holding back on a temper that will erupt some day.
Welcome to Backyard chickens. Sometimes the best way to learn is through mistakes, so we avoid doing it again.
