I still think if you go there with a boatload of people they are going to give up. They are not going to shoot anyone with so many witnesses around unless they are beyond stupid. I would be polite but firm. I wouldn't consider it more than a little white lie (justified for the sake of the birds) to say these birds have some special needs and they need their medications daily. Tell them that you have informed the police and produced your receipt. Tell them you appreciate that they have kept them safe up till now but that they must go back with you now and get the special care they need. Right away, because they're already off schedule.
People like this are unlikely to be wonderful animal caretakers. They are bullies and regular reasoning doesn't work with bullies.
I am glad you talked your DH down - his solution is no solution at all. Only the birds suffer.

Thank you for all the kind words. I did not talk DH down. He was just simply speaking up out of anger. He would NEVER do something like that.

The only problem with going down there is they have them in the same pen with the donkey, the female llama(the donkey killed the male llama and baby), and a gazillion goats. Someone would most certainly get hurt as the donkey is vicious from the way they have mistreated him. The pen is very large (about 2 acres) and the gate is up by their front porch. Their place is locked up tight to prevent the police from getting in.

They have had the 3 boys go out and fold the tops of the field fence over so when the birds try to fly up the hit the fence. Hopefully they will soon figure out to fly up from further away.

Also I am disabled and there is no way I would ever be able to catch them.

Everyone's advice has been very well taken and very greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, I think I am going to have to chalk this up to a very hard lesson learned. I am going to pen my babies back up(since I am now down to four) and try to buy another adult at the auction and hope that it will call them home. They are both male so maybe if I get them a girl this weekend, they will come to her.

Thanks again to everyone that gave such terrifically helpful advice! I do love each and every one of you for listening to me and reassuring me and basically letting me know that I am not crazy or alone!

Sorry to hear about your babies. I would keep calling the police it is just not right that they are not doing anything. Hopefully they figure out how to fly out. I know mine can fly up really high and into trees so we will keep our fingers crossed for u

Try the Game warden or how about the state patrol? Explain to them that you have dealt with your local sheriff's office and that they are not doing anything.

don't give up, that's B.S. your sheriff's dept won't do anything. if local law enforcement won't help, i'd call the state police.

or i'd sneak over at night and steal them back. and i'd be armed. its legal to carry an unconcealed weapon, so that's just what i'd do. no way can she steal your pets.

i'm really mad just reading this, so i can only imagine how you must feel.

and i would keep detailed notes of all the conversations with dates and times including those with the sheriff in case you do end up needing to sue.

also, the person who suggested ASPCA is on to something. llamas are good livestock guards b/c they will stomp smaller animals to death so if they are in with a llama and a donkey who both have the potential to harm the birds, they might help you get them back.

good luck to you.

That is simply LUDICRUS!!! Oy, the nerve of some people. I absolutely agree with OHChick, and if you yourself are unable to, enlist DH. I don't know where you are located, but where I come from, animal theft is a CRIME. Pity SSS wont work on people, eh?

PS: Ranting out of anger here, OBVIOUSLY I would never advacate the killing of another human being out of revenge.

Um, hate to be the voice of reason as what they didn't is atrocious, but please do not go onto their property with a loaded weapon in the middle of the night, that is just asking for tragedy....

Hopefully they will fly out -- Guineas are great at that...Good luck.

I would be on the phone calling every law enforcement, animal control, game wardens, rescue groups I could think of but one way or another I'd have my babies back by nightfall. Good Luck in trying to get them back and don't give up!!
