Heat and chickens

Even if you have a roofed run, I think it is important to look at your shade at 10:00 in the morning, and 4:00 in the afternoon. Shade moves throughout the day.

Always enough water, just plain water. I often consider when caring for my birds, what are the wild turkeys and prairie chickens getting? Nothing fancy, just water.

I do think my chickens struggle when it’s hot but…

People often say don’t heat your coop in the winter. The chickens will acclimate.

I think that’s true.

I think the reverse is also mostly true? Unless you live in a super hot place where the temps get well above 90F, I think following the basics (airflow, water) is a fine advice. No?

They have access to water and we put water in their run. I know chickens aren't like ducks but we thought maybe they would want to stand in it and get their feet cool.
If you have any clay bricks or like the terra cotta flower pot bases, set those in a dishpan or similar, and put ice in there. The clay absorbs the cold, and they can stand on the bricks rather than in the water.
