Hi, I made a long post about our smelly chickens but didn't get any bites. They stink real bad all of a sudden. Not them, but the poop. It's been about a month. No other symptoms. Coop is CLEAN.

Any advice? Or why after 4 years they're all having really smelly poop?

Well…I think more information is in order. Do you have photos? Does the poop look different? Has their diet changed at all?
This is my last post....

Last November we "rescued" a rooster and a hen. The hen had a broken toe and the rooster was very sick with some sort of upper respiratory infection. I nursed him back to health, with the lovely help of this community 💖 he was in our bathroom for about 2 weeks, then back outside to their month long quarantine together. They stayed in a separate area about 1/4th of an acre away from our current flock. Everything seemed good so I they went with out flock of 9 ladies.

Fast forward to now, a little over a month together, and they SMELL SO BAD!!! All of them. It's like cecal poop all of the time. It is also tinted green 😓 some of my girls are having it stick around their vent feathers. Now there are huge amounts of flies, which have never been an issue. None of this has ever been an issue. Our flock has ages ranging from 3-4, so they're no spring chickens. They're all acting fine. Some of my older girls appear older now.... Is that a thing? Their face looks more wrinkly than I remember. Im also hyper aware right now, you know how it is.

I also gave them all a fenben parasite cleanse when they joined the flock. They had leg mites, which I treated with elector psp, and will do another in a week as our feathered feet girls seem to still have them around the feathers coming out of the toe.

Idk, chicken raising had been "easy" for me up until this point. I've had sick ladies and they bounce back and everything is good. This feels different and the smell is horrendous. I clean every day, with a deep clean once a week at this point, and it still smells. Saturday lime is on the way right now.

I feel like I made a huge mistake. Damn this heart of mine for not being able to say no to these strays we got. I feel like I infected the entire flock, even through all the precautions, with something and feel just awful about it.

P.s. it is their actual poop that smells, but the ground or even just the coop. I hang out in there with them and when they poop in front of me it is God awful.

I am sorry that you having such difficulty with your flock.

It would be good if you could post a photo of their poops, pictures help identifying things.

If I was you, I would:

Check each chicken individually top to bottom - looking for poop stuck somewhere in their feather, vent, any part of the body, and see if there is any flesh wound.

Check the coop/run to see if there is anything that cause the smell - dead animal rat/mouse, poop sticking somewhere

Are they having liquid poops, what sort of poops as some are more stinky than the other.

Give them some sprout whole grain as treat for a few days to see if the smelly condition improve.

In the past I had stinking smell on my chicken because poop stuck under her tummy. A stinking poop stuck in the corner of the nestbox.

I gave my flock sprouted grains as treat, just sprout out a bit and this improve their poops, no liquid, and not stink up the place.

All the best with your flock

Is it wet where you are? That always adds to the smell. Can you put a lot shavings in the coop/run until you get it resolved ? I would make sure to have probiotics in their water and have theor poop tested for worms. I haven't heard of the wormer fenben, but have used safeguard successfully.

Sorry, fenbendazol to knock out the parasites. Purchased at tractor supply.

And this might be strange, but I just switched to alfalfa for their box nesting material.
Photos of the Poop?

Did the smell worsen after you added Alfalfa to the nesting boxes?

You rescued the birds in November, so you've had the newbies for approx. 3months. You mention now at a little over a month together (with your flock?) things smell bad?

Were the rescues in a separate area for approx 2months? The poop was not bad then right?

They've all been together about a month and now the poop smells bad, its green and you added alfalfa to nesting boxes within the last month(?).

Do I have it all right?

If so, take out the Alfalfa and replace it with some pine shavings or straw. See that everyone is eating/drinking normally, has grit (Crushed Granite) and oyster shell free choice. See if after a week or so the poop begins improves.

Have you changed feed at all? What's the protein content?
