Chickens will step in shallow water something like 1 inch deep but a pool no they are not ducks, I get blankets from the second hand store and put them on the ground and get the blanket wet and they will sit on the blanket also make sure it is in the shade ....

Also I put ice in the water and use 5 gallon waterier's for them to stand around and it is kind of funny to watch them stand around them and if the ice was just put in they put their feet in the water one at a time and when it get's over 115 F degrees I put a fan in the coop to move the air around ......

If they are young chicks have just a shallow pan of water for them to step it, chicks can drown in small amount of water if they fall head first. Shade, shade and more shade is what they need, real or manufactured. You can stretch a tarp over some area to give them more shade. Have extra water pans and keep them filled with clean water.

You can freeze gallon plastic bottles of water and set them around - chickens can go near them to cool down. Some people use misting hoses too.

Cool treats like watermelon or cantaloupe with make them happy.

Welcome to BYC! You have been some good advice by the other BYC members! The three most important keys for chickens to survive the heat is shade (lots of it as drumstick diva has said), good ventilation in the coop, and plenty of fresh water. Also, some breeds are more heat resistant than other breeds. What kind of chickens do you have?

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

You have been given some great advice here already. You might also do some chatting with your chicken neighbors in your state thread to see how they keep their birds cool...

Great to have you aboard and good luck with keeping your birds safe and happy this summer!

The two Golden Sex Links are only moderately heat resistant and it would be a good idea to follow some of the suggestions that the other BYC members have given you. The two blue egg layers are probably Easter Eggers and the same can be said of them as the GSLs. The Black ones might be Black Australorps which are very heat resistant, but without pics of them, it's impossible to say. If you would like them identified, just post some pics of them (preferably full body profiles showing the legs and tails) and we can probably ID them for you. Good luck with your flock.
