I always keep an extra bulb for just that very thing. I brood in March/April in New Jersey and use the infra red heat bulbs to discourage pecking.

Aye, most people still have some incandescent bulbs in the closet somewhere; a 75 or 100 watt bulb should put out enough heat to keep your kids from shivering. Let us know how it goes.

I'm not sure which bulb is in there.

My bro's did it. I felt underneath it and it didn't seem to be giving off much heat. But they have been using it for about 3 nights now, and they appear to be just fine. It has also been really really warm here (90), so I think they should be fine.

I will check on them sometimes though, and if they seem cold I'll probably put soda bottles filled with hot water again. That seemed to work.
