Update on the babies in the old barn.
Insulated coop, no heat, 6 in brooder box with heat plate, have backup ready if we need it.

Shoutout to my husband who went out to the coop 2 days ago since a cold snap was coming tonight/tomorrow and wrapped the brooder kennel in 2 emergency silver blankets, secured them, added 2 large towels to the back and side where it's likely the coldest for the 1 week olds. Yes there are ventilation openings.

Just checked on the chicks not a peep sleeping hard under the heat plate.

Here is a peek at our temps.
It's 14 outside real feel of 8.

Blue is brooder box, yellow are lay boxes where a small radiator heater resides underneath on lowest setting, green is the coop itself.

So thankful! I fought him insulating this coop and I admit he was correct. He double insulated 2 walls. Proof is in these numbers tonight! 47 in the brooder!

Happy babies happy mama!

Awesome! I'm a fan of insulation too. Temps in my insulated brooder prove me right as well. With good ventilation, heating babies is just not so difficult and on the flip, in summer hot temps, the space is much cooler than outside. It's in the 30's here and I have babies in the brooder with only a MHP.

It is really quite simple isn't it?

As we move ahead I will be designing a few separate spaces under the poop trays and for sure will insulate the brooder box floor and ceiling. Isolation area maybe no insulation there im not sure. The cage was all I could do this year not ideal but it served its purpose at least so far.

Just checked on them again and they are very happy. Pretty cool really.

Couldn't agree more. Just checked on mine too. They're 5days old. They are doing as they should, zipping out of MHP for a stetch, food, scratch a bit, water, back under the MHP. They seem happy and funny, All is well. :thumbsup
