Heat Lamp Fire

While I don't disagree, I venture to guess for the same reason people look at what seasoned poultry folks easily recognize as entirely undesirable housing for poultry - those awful prefab setups- and think, "oh. perfect....and it says I can put 10 chickens in there".... the products are presented as being suitable as is and many consumers assume that means they are safe, right, suitable
That's a good point. Yet I would consider knowing how much room those tiny chicks will someday need "specialty knowledge". Being able to recognize that heat lamps need to be secured just seems like common sense. I also think the folks who sell them with those clamps included will eventually be sued in a class action lawsuit. That'll be the end of that.

Oh wow. Yes, good reminder. After just having a neighborhood fire, this is really helpful. Although, my friend stopped using a heating pad because it was burning the chicks backs..?
Pad or plate.....I've heard of injuries from brooder plates but not from ther mhp setup

i got one of those heat plates from premier 1 supply...it felt very hot to me so i called them they said it feels hot because more than body temp. if it is burning the chicks back it is not high enough for them. it has to be adjusted as they grow and that happens pretty quickly and mine LOVE it. when it was real cold a couple week ago and they were day olds i also had ONE heat lamp but my brooder is pretty deep and it rests on top of the wire lid i have (1/2" hardware cloth). i don't worry about fire any more. after a week i eliminated the heat lamp anyway and truthfully they would be fine with JUST the plate. it is awesome...

the cool thing about the plate is that they sleep at night as they should....they go under like it was a mama hen and they come out to eat and go under to get warm. way more natural. if they are in the house they are quiet at night which was awesome!

Yes, that is awful!
I put a chain on my heat lamps and attach it at two different parts. I alao use the clip. Three parts would have to fail at the same time for those lamps to fall down - highly unlikely. I fix something sturdy to hang it from and it is either above the wire fence lid we have on top of the brooder or I put hardware cloth around the wireguard. I use an extra sturdy thick red glass bulb from Philips the first two days then switch to ceramic heat emitters, both options are less likely to break than a regular red bulb. So far so good. I don’t think the heating pad is burn proof either, fires have been started by electric blankets....
