And pet stores sell read heat bulbs at 75W and 50W, so those would be cheaper as well. Just use a thermometer to test the temp directly under the lamp (plus you can raise/lower your lamp to adjust as well). If you're brooding in the house, you shouldn't need a high wattage bulb...

I had this in my hand today and put it back. I wasn't sure about using it inside the house. I bought a 250 W red heat light and found it too warm. I am using a clear 100 W heat bulb and after reading about the effects from it, I am trying to find something else. I am attached to the cuties already and want to do what's best for them.

So Excited !!! I went to the pet store today and found my red light bulb. It's the same one they used for reptiles. It works perfect !!

People seem to be hung up on the word HEAT LAMP RED 250w. .There are probably more chcks cooked with them than ever die from too cold .All incadecent bulbs put out heat if you doubt (grab one thats been on) .You can use most any bulb hung down in a box /plastic tub 6" or so above there head (where they cannot touch or break it and it will not start fire). You just got to play with the wattage tell you get the temp where you want it (also by raising or lowering bulb if room available) or use a dimmer switch...And remember if your in a controled enviorment Temp wise its a piece of cake .Out in a barn or garage/up north or where temp changes a lot you got to keep eye on it.Or you could add a thermostat to watch for you.Do not get bulb tooo close to water (they splater it and if it hits hot bulb (BUSTED).Also leave one end a little cooler so they can get away if it gets too hot...cva34

250 watt heat lamps have there place (i've used lots ) There not nessary for just a few Chicks .What that number is is determined where your are could be ALASKA...

Another place you can get the red low watt bulb and reptile bulbs is Walmart. I have found them there cheaper than anywhere.
