Heat Lamp question

Very nice brooder! And great idea for the dimmer too!

I would love a brooder that big, I could get 100 chicks in there! Oh, but wait, hubby would kill me...........

Got the phone call this morning at 5:30am. I had forgotten which phone number I gave the hatchery so I had both cell phones and the land line next to the bed. When the call came I knew immediately what it was. I woke the girls up (12 & 14) and drove down to get them. The box was warm, and wonderful sounds of live chicks was emanating from the air holes. When the girls heard it they made that high pitched oohing and aahing sound that only dogs and cats can hear. All 25 + 1 chicks were alive and doing well. Their beaks were dutifully dipped in water and placed in the warm brooder. They immediately started eating and exploring. We home school our girls but I don't think they will get any of their work done today.

I will post pictures soon.

We homeschool too, and are expecting chicks this week. Its going to be hard to get the kids focused on arrival day. lol I so understand! Congrats on your babies!!! And

We just got our chicks last night too!!!! 27 little chickies in the brooder this morning. You would have thought it was Christmas morning the way my 3 year old son behaved this morning. No naps today... he even sat on the floor in front of the brooder to eat his breakfast AND lunch!!! Thankfully, he's playing with his brother now but I'm sure when daddy gets home he'll have to give daddy the update on how the chicks are doing.

I love the dimmer switch on your brooder. My hubby made a dimmer switch for our brooder too that looks VERY similar to yours. It's been very convenient in controlling the temp in there. I've learned to just watch the chicks and have realized they will sleep wherever they're comfortable. The past week leading up to the arrival of the chicks was sleepless for me too. I've been wanting chicks for 6 months now and the closer we got to the delivery date, the more scared I'd get about being able to keep them healthy and alive. I feel better knowing I'm not the only one who went through that thought process.

Congrats on your chicks.

I use 2 heat lamps spaced a little bit apart at different heights and the chicks always seem to find the perfect spot. It also makes a paranoid person to be able to sleep and not worry about one heat lamp burning out in the middle of the night and the chick getting cold.

Thanks all. I haven't had a chance to get pictures up yet since I'm trying to figure out which coop to build. Yes, I ordered chicks without a coop. Yes, my wife thinks I'm crazy too. I call it motivation. I'll try to get something posted soon. I'm taking two days off this week to get a good start on the project.

My girls haven't done anything but sit by the brooder for the last two days. One little chicken gal is having a hard time and my girls are doing everything they can to keep it alive (even praying). We'll see if God answers in the affirmative. They've been giving it sugar water and tried to feed her scrambled eggs. It won't die from lack of attention that is for sure. Her name (the chick's) is June (short for junior). I'll keep you posted. All the others are vibrant and active. It has been a blast watching them run around the brooder.
