So i'm clueless about the heatlamps. I have 2 and have them clipped in my coop and they keep it nice and cozy, I sat in the coop myself for a second and it kept me nice and toasty so it does the job. I have it set up on a light sensor plug that turns them on at night and off during the day. My chicks are still pretty small, only had them a couple weeks from the feed store here, so I just wonder how long you keep a lamp on for them. Our winter is coming to an end so I know I won't need one for the summer unless it gets colder somehow but when winter hits again next year and they are bigger, will they still need the heat lamp? Its no trouble, I just want to make sure I give my girls whatever they need. I bought them and am their caregiver so they pretty much depend on me. Call me silly for thinking like they are my kids, but its true, its like taking on kids when you have pets. You take responsibility for giving them everything they need because they are helpless. So whatever advice you can give me would be great. I know i'm asking this question way in advance but just am curious for now how this whole chicken thing works still. Ha. So thanks in advance for the help. I love all my fellow chicken lovers out there! This forum rocks!

I'd leave the light on for them to stay warm until night time temps are in the 60's, or they chicks are 8 weeks old or so. After that they won't need the light and they should be fine! Good to hear your chicks are doing well!

I agree with silkie.....at 8 weeks, they should be feathered out pretty nicely...and should not need heat, unless the temps drop pretty low....like below say 50. If they have a good insulated coop, and I am sure they do...and clean litter....they should be fine. Congrats on the new "kids" Enjoy. Altho my chickens are more for the egg business...mine are spoiled pretty much like yours. Treats...warm home..and lots of love. Keep up the great work!! Got pics?

When the peeps are little I leave the light on 24/7 till they are feathered out. If they are huddled together during the day with the light off, I would turn it back on.

So yeah i'm putting a slideshow on the front page as not everyone on here is into myspace. If you don't have one you can still view their front page. So thanks again guys!!! Love you all!
