Hey, I was just setting up my brooder lamp so I can get ready for my babies that are coming this week. Is it ok for this lamp to be hot where the cord comes out the back? I got a 250W red bulb. Is that to big of a wattage?
Probably a silly question but I'm asking anyway. Lol
Thanks

Yes the porcelain piece on the back gets hot. That is normal with a 250w bulb.

If your brooder is inside where the temp is a constant 75 degrees or so, then you definately don't need a 250w bulb. Maybe 125w or less.

If your brooder is outside, then you will just have to play with different bulbs to see. TN this time of year, I'd guess a 125w bulb would work too or smaller.

I have it set up in my garage. I've got it already positioned to 95 degrees. I guess I was just making sure I wasn't going to burn my house down 😂

I personally don't feel safe using a 250W, you'd only need it if you're heating a very large area. They can run so hot that you can smell it.

Try a reptile bulb instead, they work the same but come in much lower wattages from 50 to 125 or so.
Yea, my daughter commented that she was smelling blueberry waffles 😅
