The temperature needs to be measured on the surface below the heat lamp. The air temperature reading below the heat lamp will be less than the surface temperature. While the recommendation is for 95°F the first week, 90°F is often enough. If the keets are panting then they are too hot. You need to heat only a portion of the brooder and a portion must be left at lower temperatures so that they can escape the heat if necessary.

You can adjust the temperature of the surface beneath the heat lamp by raising or lowering the lamp. By the sounds of your panting keets, you most likely need to raise the heat lamp. The keets will tell you if they are getting too cold by huddling together and making lots of noise.

Good luck.

I will go a step further and say that 95 was WAY too hot for my guinea keets the first week. 90 was also too warm. Mine were comfortable at 85 at week 1, 80 at week 2 and 75 at week 3. I stopped using the heat lamp after about 10 days. They let you know if they are too warm by panting and chirping like crickets! If too cold, just chirping like crickets!

It's reading 90 Down where they are laying on the one side and they can move to the other side if to warm I am using a ceramic heat bulb and not the heat lamp because it was just too hot it's already 80 where my keets are During the day

I asked because I read if not heated at certain temp they would die and guineas are not like chicks..they are finicky..learning experience

Heat lamp should be so it is 95 under it. But your cage needs to be big enough as if they are warm they will move away from the lamp. Our babies are in a 2' X 4' cage and it gives them plenty of room. Good luck.
