Heat Plates can be so depressing.

I use a heat pad, not a plate, but I personally liked the fact that the chicks were quietly tucked under it at evening instead of peeping throughout the night. Sure I'd feel better if I could clearly see them, but they seemed a lot more cozy and well adjusted being able to run to "mama" to warm up and then playing around outside after that.

That's a perspective I had not considered. I felt guilty with my chicks never getting to have a proper night cycle when they were in the brooder. They would be awake all hours of the night and day! I've only had one batch of chicks, but thought that I would get a heat plate next time I get chicks.
Hey girl!! I feel the same exact way... I hate the dreaded heat light! Did you ever notice if you turn it off or the electricity goes out.. they all huddle together and FINALLY get to sleep...

Hey girl! Are you staying dry over there? That rain really got y'all!

I did notice that about them sleeping when the light was off. I used to put a towel across half the brooder so they could have shade. Theres a thread on here on how to make a "mother heating pad". I'm thinking about making one next time.

I may be able to help you with that. I have an “in” with the lady who started that thread. ;)

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Chicken+Stuffed+animal&ref=nb_sb_noss_2 and for my 1000th post... I thought I would share a link for stuff animals we can place on top of our brooder plates... although I am not certain if its a fire hazard although I highly doubt it is. they have different breeds and patterns... Silkie, Barred, Red, Columbian etc... (ADDED THROUGH EDIT: I am not going to do this because my cosmetic affects budget is currently $0)

For two of them.. one batch I gave to my broody Silkie.. I just integrated them in the flock... Lord help me.. here they are learning to roost with mama..
